About Skillman Church of Christ
God calls Skillman to participate in his mission as a sign of and witness to his love for the world. He put us in east Dallas nearly one hundred years ago to proclaim good news and to be good news to the people of this city and beyond. God has brought many changes to us including a now growing Hispanic congregation, the arrival of many new singles and families in our immediate neighborhood and a growing group of young adult members.
We seek to welcome people from every station of life to join with us in our journey into God’s future as we allow Him to transform us into the likeness of Jesus. To this end, we desire to encourage an atmosphere where every person may thrive spiritually, where every generation feels treasured and welcomed and where social and racial barriers are absent. Trusting in the Holy Spirit’s work in our church, we continue to pursue long-standing Skillman values of compassion, hospitality and godly service. We remain committed to faithful mission, to a faithful reading of Scripture, to discerning God’s will for us and to our heritage in Churches of Christ.
God’s creation story, his work in history and the sending of his Son reveals his eternal good will toward us. At Skillman, we know that we have often failed to appreciate his goodness; we invite other strugglers to join us in seeking him and participating in his good mission for the whole world.
Our History
The Skillman Church of Christ has roots that are more than 90 years old. During the first half of the century the church was located at a number of different sites, beginning near downtown Dallas. As the congregation grew, it moved a bit farther east in order to find space to expand.
For years the church met in a facility on Garrett Avenue, then built a major plant at the intersection of Sears and Summit. Rapid growth at the end of the Second World War forced the church to look once more for additional space. That led to the relocation in 1951 to our present site. With this new address, the congregation also became known as the Skillman Church of Christ.
The church has expanded its initial building several times. We first added the East Wing, then later the North Wing. In 1997 the church bought half a block of land immediately to the north. Construction of the new Family Life Center began in June of 2001 and the church began to use the beautiful new facility in June of 2002. We have recently completed an extensive renovation of the old education space in the main building. This renovation provides new and updated education facilities for pre-school and children's education as well as a new library and adult meeting rooms.
